About this map

Data

This map shows the weekly vaccination rate of at least one dose of any vaccine. The data are animated using a 12-week rolling average to reduce excessive variation in low population areas and is animated weekly from 2006 - 2016.

Hit the play button to start the animation. You can drag the playhead to jump through time. Clicking the National Trend button displays a line graph showing the change in national rate for the duration of the animation. Mouse over any unit on the map to view a line chart of the monthly average rate for that specific entity.

Using the Map

The map allows you to switch between boundaries and data for:

  1. States
  2. Counties
  3. Zip(5) Codes

Because of its size, zip code data display as a binary map, showing if the zip codes are above or below a critical threshold (75%).

Technology

This map is built using the D3 visualization library which renders states and counties as SVG graphics and zip codes to Canvas graphics. The data and geography are served from a PostGIS database via an ExpressJS API.

The map switches between the Albers Equal Area projection to a Mercator projection after zooming past a set threshold. The Albers projection is more appropriate for choropleth mapping, but the Mercator projection allows the integration of basemap tiles for geographic context.
